A.31.21

Massey Ferguson A.31.21: External Hydraulic Valve 3 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction, communication failure, or physical fault associated with the tractor's third rear remote/auxiliary hydraulic spool valve.

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness and electrical connector at the 3rd external hydraulic valve for corrosion, bent pins, or a loose connection

  2. Verify that the tractor's hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and that the hydraulic filters are not clogged

  3. Inspect the 3rd spool valve block for visible leaks, damaged O-rings, or a physically stuck spool lever/actuator

  4. Inspect the 1/2-inch ISO 5675 female quick couplers at the rear remote for damage or debris that could be causing back-pressure or flow restriction

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic controls (levers or electronic switches) to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Disconnect Electronics

Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Unplug the electrical harness connector from the 3rd external hydraulic valve.

  3. Remove Hoses/Couplers

Disconnect the hydraulic lines and quick couplers attached to the 3rd valve block. Cap the lines immediately to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

  4. Dismount the Valve

Unbolt the 3rd spool valve from the hydraulic lift cover or the remote valve stack (usually located under the cab/seat area or at the rear of the tractor).

  5. Repair or Replace

If rebuilding: Disassemble the valve and use an OEM repair kit to replace the internal O-rings, NBR/FPM seals, and springs. If replacing: Mount the new 3rd spool valve block to the stack, ensuring all mating surfaces are clean and new O-rings are used between the valve slices.

  6. Reassembly

Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the hydraulic lines and the electrical harness.

  7. Test and Clear

Reconnect the battery, top off the hydraulic fluid, and start the tractor. Actuate the 3rd valve to bleed air from the system and check for leaks. Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the A.31.21 code from the system.
