A.31.22

Massey Ferguson A.31.22 – TECU: External Hydraulic Valve 3 Issue

Issue description

Check the cause

  1. Check the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) level and condition. Dark, burnt-smelling, or milky fluid can cause the valve spool to stick.

  2. Inspect the hydraulic filter for partial blockages that restrict flow and force the system to work harder.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to External Valve 3 for rub points, damaged insulation, or corrosion.

  4. Test the Valve 3 solenoid coil resistance using a multimeter to rule out an internal short or open circuit.

  5. Perform a pressure test using a hydraulic pressure gauge at the remote coupler for Valve 3 to verify pump delivery and relief valve function.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve System Pressure

Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic levers/controls to relieve all residual pressure in the system before uncoupling any lines.

  2. Resolve Electrical Faults

If the diagnostic tests revealed a wiring issue, repair the damaged harness section. If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, replace the solenoid on Valve 3.

  3. Service the Valve Block

If the electrical circuit is intact but the code persists, the valve spool is likely sticking mechanically. Remove the Valve 3 section from the rear hydraulic block.

  4. Clean and Reseal

Inspect the spool for scoring or metal shavings. Clean the valve body thoroughly. Replace all internal O-rings and seals. If the spool or housing is heavily scored, the entire valve section must be replaced.

  5. Fluid and Filter Maintenance

If the fluid was degraded, drain the hydraulic system, replace the hydraulic filter, and refill with fresh OEM-spec UTTO fluid.

  6. Recalibrate and Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery and harness. Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.31.22 code and run a valve calibration routine.
