A.31.24

Massey Ferguson A.31.24 – Autotronic 5 ECU: External Hydraulic Valve 3 Issue

Issue description

This code indicates an electrical, communication, or mechanical malfunction within the third electrohydraulic spool valve (remote valve) slice. The underlying condition is typically a connection problem, a failure of the internal potentiometer/position sensor, a faulty solenoid, or a CAN bus communication error that prevents the valve from responding to the armrest joystick or SMS (Spool Management System) controls.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the LED indicator on the electronic spool valve itself (solid red indicates power, green indicates input, flashing indicates an internal fault).

  2. Attempt to operate the valve manually using the external linkage/levers at the rear. If it operates manually but not via the cab joystick, the issue is isolated to the electrical circuit, CAN bus, or the valve's electronic head.

  3. Inspect the 4-pin electrical connector and wiring harness going to Spool Valve 3 for corrosion, moisture, or broken wires.

  4. Connect the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) or Massey Ferguson Wintest software. Navigate to the 'List of AUTO5 error codes' to read specific sub-codes, monitor the active/requested values of the valve's potentiometer, and verify if the ECU detects the valve.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the system

Lower all hydraulic implements to the ground, turn off the tractor, and relieve all hydraulic system pressure.

  2. Clean the valve block

Thoroughly clean the rear hydraulic valve block assembly to prevent dirt from contaminating the hydraulic system during disassembly.

  3. Disconnect electronics

Unplug the 4-pin electrical connector from External Hydraulic Valve 3.

  4. Remove the valve slice

Unbolt the tie rods/mounting bolts holding the spool valve stack together. Carefully separate the block and slide out the defective Spool Valve 3 slice. (Note: Massey Ferguson typically only sells the complete valve slice rather than internal electronic components, though detent modifications are sometimes possible on 7600 series).

  5. Install the new valve

Insert the new electrohydraulic spool valve slice, ensuring all O-rings and seals are properly seated between the slices.

  6. Reassemble and torque

Reinstall the tie rods and torque them to the manufacturer's specifications to prevent high-pressure leaks.

  7. Reconnect wiring

Plug the 4-pin connector back into the new valve.

  8. Software calibration

Connect the AGCO EDT or Wintest diagnostic software. The new valve slice must be programmed/calibrated to the tractor's Autotronic 5 system to ensure proper flow rates, kick-out functions, and joystick response.
