Massey Ferguson A.32.18 – TECU (Tractor Electronic Control Unit) or Hydraulic Control Module: External Hydraulic Valve 3 Issue
Issue description
The tractor's control system has detected a malfunction in the circuit or operation of the 3rd rear remote hydraulic spool valve. The underlying condition is typically an electrical fault (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power at the valve's solenoid), a communication error on the CAN bus, or a mechanical issue such as a stuck valve spool or blocked pressure line.

Check the cause
Electrical & Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to External Hydraulic Valve 3 (usually located at the rear remote stack). Look for rub points, broken wires, or melted insulation.
Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at the valve solenoid. Check for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back pins. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.
Solenoid Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. Compare it to the OEM spec (an open circuit or a dead short indicates a failed coil).
Voltage/Ground Test: Verify that the valve is receiving proper voltage and has a solid ground when the in-cab control (FingerTIP or joystick) is actuated.
Mechanical Check: Ensure the hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and the filters are clean. Check if the valve spool is physically jammed by attempting to actuate it manually (if equipped with a manual override).
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and actuate the hydraulic levers/buttons to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure.
Access the Valve
Locate the rear remote valve block. Identify Valve 3 (usually the third slice from the inlet).
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the Valve 3 solenoid.
Solenoid Replacement (If applicable)
If only the electronic solenoid/actuator has failed, remove the retaining nut or screws holding the coil to the valve body, slide the old coil off, and install the new one.
Valve Section Replacement (If spool is damaged/stuck)
Disconnect the hydraulic lines and quick couplers attached to Valve 3. Remove the tie-rod bolts holding the hydraulic valve stack together. Carefully slide out the faulty Valve 3 section, ensuring you do not lose or damage the O-rings between the valve slices. Install the new valve section with new O-rings. Reinsert the tie-rod bolts and torque them to the manufacturer's specification.
Reassembly
Reconnect the hydraulic lines and the electrical harness.
Testing
Start the tractor, check for hydraulic leaks, and test the operation of Remote 3. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.32.18 fault code from the TECU.
