A.33.12

Massey Ferguson A.33.12 – ECU (Electronic Control Unit) or Electrohydraulic / Autotronic controller: External Hydraulic Valve 3 Issue

Issue description

Triggered when the tractor's onboard diagnostic system detects a malfunction in the circuit or operation of the third electrohydraulic remote/spool valve. The underlying condition is typically an electrical fault (such as an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to power in the solenoid wiring), a failure of the valve's internal position sensor, or a mechanical sticking of the spool valve that prevents it from responding to the controller's commands.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Check the electrical connector at External Hydraulic Valve 3 (usually located at the rear hydraulic valve stack) for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.

  2. Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the valve for rub points, open circuits, or shorts to ground/power.

  3. Coil Resistance Test: Measure the resistance of the solenoid coil on Valve 3 with a multimeter to ensure it is within the manufacturer's specification and not internally shorted.

  4. Component Swap Test: Swap the electrical connection (or the solenoid coil itself) with an adjacent working valve (like Valve 2 or Valve 4). If the error code changes to the new valve number, the issue is the coil or the mechanical valve slice. If the code remains A.33.12, the issue is in the wiring harness or the controller.

  5. LED Indicator Check: Observe the small LED on the valve itself. Solid red indicates it is receiving power, green indicates it is receiving input to move. If the LED is flashing, the valve's internal digital device is detecting a local fault (like a displacement sensor error).

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the tractor, lower all implements to the ground, and cycle the hydraulic controls to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Disconnect Electronics

Disconnect the wiring harness from External Hydraulic Valve 3.

  3. Address Wiring (If Applicable)

If diagnostic checks revealed a harness issue, repair the broken wire or replace the damaged connector pigtail.

  4. Replace Solenoid Coil (If Applicable)

If the coil failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut at the end of the spool valve, slide the old coil off the cartridge, install the new coil, and tighten the nut.

  5. Replace the Spool Valve Assembly (If Applicable)

If the valve's internal pilot valve or displacement sensor has failed: Thoroughly clean the area around the hydraulic valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the system. Unbolt the tie-rods holding the valve stack together. Carefully remove the faulty Valve 3 slice. Install the replacement spool valve slice, ensuring all O-rings are properly seated between the valve sections. Reinstall and torque the tie-rod bolts to the OEM specification.

  6. Reassembly and Testing

Reconnect the wiring harness. Start the tractor, test the operation of Valve 3 using the cab joystick or fingertip controls, and check for leaks.

  7. Clear Codes

Use a compatible diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard Datatronic terminal to clear the A.33.12 fault code from the ECU's memory.
