A.33.21

Massey Ferguson A.33.21 – Hydraulic Control Module / Tractor Control Unit (TCU) / Armrest Controller: External Hydraulic Valve 3 Issue

Issue description

A malfunction associated with the tractor's third external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve), indicating an electrical fault (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or poor connection at the valve's solenoid) or a mechanical issue (such as a stuck spool preventing the valve from actuating properly).

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the electrical connector at External Hydraulic Valve 3 (located at the rear remote valve stack) for corrosion, dirt, moisture, or loose pins.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the 3rd remote valve for rub points, breaks, or shorts to ground.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the coil resistance of the valve's solenoid to ensure it is within OEM specifications and not shorted or open.

  4. Verify that the electronic control lever or fingertip switch in the cab armrest is functioning correctly and sending the proper signal to the module.

  5. Ensure the tractor's hydraulic fluid level is correct and the filters are clean, as low pressure or contaminated fluid can cause valve sticking.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, relieve all hydraulic system pressure by cycling the remote levers, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the rear hydraulic valve block area to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during disassembly.

  3. Disconnect Electronics

Unplug the electrical harness connector from External Hydraulic Valve 3.

  4. Replace Solenoid (If Electrical)

If diagnostics point to a failed solenoid coil, remove the retaining nut, slide the old coil off the valve cartridge, and install the new coil.

  5. Replace/Clean Valve (If Mechanical)

If the spool is physically stuck, unbolt the 3rd valve section from the hydraulic stack. Inspect the spool for scoring or debris. If damaged, replace the entire valve section. Ensure new O-rings are used between the valve slices.

  6. Reassembly

Torque all hydraulic block bolts to OEM specifications and reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Clear Codes & Test

Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the A.33.21 code. Actuate the 3rd remote valve to confirm proper operation and check for leaks.
