Massey Ferguson A.33.24 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU) or implement/hydraulic control module: External Hydraulic Valve 3 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction, communication failure, or pressure irregularity associated with the third rear remote hydraulic valve (spool valve). It typically points to an electrical fault (such as a short circuit, open load, or poor connection at the valve's solenoid) or a mechanical failure preventing the valve from operating correctly.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) level and condition. If it is dark, smells burnt, or looks milky (water contamination), it must be changed. Ensure the hydraulic filter is not clogged.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector going to External Valve 3 at the rear remote stack. Look for damaged wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

  3. Check for external leaks around the valve block, O-rings, and quick couplers that could cause a loss of pressure.

  4. Use a hydraulic pressure gauge on the Valve 3 quick coupler to determine if the valve is receiving and holding the correct system pressure when activated.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and apply the parking brake.

  2. Relieve Pressure

    Move the hydraulic control levers or joystick through all positions to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

  3. Disconnect Electricals

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts. Unplug the wiring harness connector from External Hydraulic Valve 3.

  4. Remove the Valve

    Clean the area around the rear remote valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Remove the retaining bolts that secure Valve 3 to the hydraulic valve block/stack.

  5. Extract and Inspect

    Carefully pull the valve away from the stack. Have a catch pan ready for residual hydraulic fluid. Inspect the mating surfaces.

  6. Replace Seals/Valve

    Remove the old O-rings from the valve block interface. Lubricate the new O-rings with clean hydraulic fluid and install them. Mount the new External Hydraulic Valve 3 (or replacement solenoid) into position.

  7. Reassembly

    Insert and tighten the retaining bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Testing

    Reconnect the battery. Top up the hydraulic fluid to replace any lost during the repair. Start the tractor, operate Valve 3 to bleed any trapped air, and check for leaks.

  9. Clear Codes

    Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.33.24 fault code from the system.
