Massey Ferguson A.33.2A – Spool Valve Controller or Mid Mount Valve Module: External Hydraulic Valve 3 Issue
Issue description
This code indicates a malfunction in the circuit or operation of the electro-hydraulic remote valve 3 (Spool Valve 3). The system has detected an electrical fault (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power) or a mechanical/hydraulic condition (such as the valve failing to return to the neutral position or a spool position sensor error). When this code is active, the tractor's control unit will typically lock out the affected valve to prevent damage.

Check the cause
Check the LED indicator on Spool Valve 3 at the rear of the tractor (solid red indicates power, green indicates input command, flashing confirms a localized fault).
Inspect the electrical connector at Spool Valve 3 for dirt, corrosion, or loose pins.
Inspect the wiring harness for rub points, open circuits, or shorts to ground.
Test the resistance of the spool valve solenoid coil with a multimeter to ensure it is within spec and not shorted out.
Ensure the external linkage or manual override (if equipped) is in the center position and not physically jammed.
Check the hydraulic/transmission oil filter, as heavily contaminated oil can cause the spool valve to stick and trigger a position sensor error.
Repair steps
Isolate the Fault
Turn the key on and observe the LED on Spool Valve 3. If it is flashing a sub-code, note the sequence.
Clean and Reconnect
Disconnect the harness from Spool Valve 3. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and reconnect.
Repair Wiring
If harness damage is found during the diagnostic checks, splice and repair the broken wires or replace the damaged harness section.
Replace Solenoid/Valve
If the wiring is intact and the coil fails the resistance test, replace the spool valve solenoid. If the valve is mechanically stuck internally (failing to return to neutral), the entire spool valve assembly must be replaced.
Clear the Code
The valve affected by the error code will remain blocked by the ECU until the code is cleared. Clear the error code from the control unit dashboard, then stop and restart the engine to reactivate the valve.
