A.3X.1F

Massey Ferguson A.3X.1F – Autotronic / Hydraulic Control Unit: External Hydraulic Valve 3 Issue

Issue description

The onboard diagnostic system has detected a malfunction in the circuit or operation of the third electrohydraulic auxiliary spool valve. This can be caused by an electrical issue (open circuit, short to ground, missing signal), a voltage drop, or a mechanical issue where the valve spool is sticking.

Check the cause

  1. Check the LED on the physical electrohydraulic valve block at the rear (solid red = power, green = commanded, flashing = internal fault or communication error)

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to Valve 3 for chafing, rub points, corrosion, bent pins, or moisture

  3. Test the cab controls (SMS joystick or armrest fingertip controls) to see if they are functioning sporadically, which may indicate an armrest controller issue

  4. Check system voltage from the battery and alternator, as low voltage can cause the Autotronic system to drop communication with the valves

  5. Attempt a reset by clearing the error code from the dashboard control unit and restarting the engine to see if the code immediately returns

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Turn off the tractor, lower all implements, and relieve hydraulic system pressure.

  2. Clean and Inspect Connections

Disconnect the electrical connector at External Hydraulic Valve 3. Clean the contacts with electronic contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  3. Test the Solenoid

Use a multimeter to check the coil resistance on the valve's solenoid. If it shows an open circuit or a dead short, the solenoid actuator has failed and must be replaced.

  4. Address Mechanical Sticking

If the valve is receiving the correct signal but failing to actuate, the valve slice must be removed from the hydraulic stack.

  5. Replace or Rebuild the Valve

Disassemble the valve stack. Replace the faulty Valve 3 slice or have it rebuilt by a hydraulic specialist.

  6. Reassemble

When reinstalling the valve slice into the stack, ensure all O-rings between the slices are replaced to prevent high-pressure leaks.

  7. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn the key on, clear the error code from the dashboard, and unlock the valves via the cab button. Start the engine and test the flow rate and kick-out functions.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Electrohydraulic Auxiliary Spool Valve (Slice)

Often manufactured by Bosch Rexroth (commonly the SB23 series). Exact OEM part numbers vary heavily depending on the tractor's exact hydraulic pump configuration (Load Sensing vs. Open Center).

  • Valve Actuator / Solenoid

Generic part name; often sold as a complete unit with the valve slice depending on the dealer.

  • Hydraulic Valve Block O-Ring / Seal Kit

Required when separating the valve slices for replacement.
