Massey Ferguson A.40.19 – Auxiliary hydraulic controller / EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) control module: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue

Issue description

Indicates an electrical or communication fault with the 4th auxiliary hydraulic remote valve. The system has detected a condition it cannot correct, which is typically an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to power, or a connection problem on the solenoid circuit that controls External Hydraulic Valve 4.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the external hydraulic valve block at the rear of the tractor and identify the 4th slice/spool (Valve 4).

  2. Disconnect the electrical harness at the Valve 4 solenoid and inspect for water ingress, corrosion, bent pins, or loose connections.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the valve for rub points or melted insulation. Use a multimeter to check for continuity, open circuits, or a short to ground between the valve connector and the hydraulic ECU.

  4. Measure the resistance of the Valve 4 solenoid coil with a multimeter. Compare the reading to the manufacturer's specification. An infinite reading indicates an open coil (failed solenoid), while a reading of zero indicates a shorted coil.

  5. If the wiring tests fine, temporarily swap the electrical connector from Valve 3 to Valve 4. If the fault code changes to indicate an issue with Valve 3, the solenoid on Valve 4 is confirmed faulty.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a flat, level surface. Lower all attached implements to the ground. Turn off the engine and remove the key.

  2. Relieve Pressure

    Cycle the hydraulic remote levers/buttons inside the cab multiple times to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

  3. Access the Valve

    Clean the exterior of the hydraulic valve block at the rear of the tractor thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during disassembly.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the Valve 4 solenoid. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem. Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge.

  5. Replace the Cartridge (If necessary)

    If the mechanical valve itself is sticking or leaking, use a wrench to unscrew the valve cartridge from the hydraulic block. Have a catch pan ready for minor fluid loss. Install the new cartridge and torque to OEM specifications.

  6. Install New Solenoid

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem and secure it with the retaining nut. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Fluid Check

    Check the tractor's hydraulic/transmission fluid level and top up if any fluid was lost during the repair.

  8. Clear Codes & Test

    Start the tractor. Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the A.40.19 / 0A.40.19 fault code. Operate the 4th hydraulic remote to ensure proper function and check for leaks.
