Massey Ferguson A.40.1F – Main Vehicle ECU: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue
Issue description
Indicates a malfunction or electrical fault specifically isolated to the 4th external hydraulic remote (the electric spool valve) at the rear of the tractor, typically an electrical communication or solenoid failure.

Check the cause
Inspect the 4-pin connector on the 4th hydraulic valve slice for corrosion, moisture ingress, or damaged pins.
Test the other hydraulic remotes and the 3-point hitch. If all hydraulics are slow or failing, the issue is likely the main hydraulic pump. If only the 4th remote is unresponsive, the fault is isolated to that specific spool slice or its solenoid.
Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the DTC. Cycle the tractor's power and actuate the 4th valve to see if the code returns immediately (hard electrical fault) or under load (mechanical/pressure fault).
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and actuate the hydraulic levers/buttons to relieve any residual pressure in the system.
Locate the Valve Block
Access the external hydraulic valve stack at the rear of the tractor. Identify the 4th valve slice.
Disconnect Wiring
Unplug the 4-pin electrical connector from the faulty spool valve.
Remove the Valve Slice
Unbolt the tie-rods or mounting bolts holding the valve stack together. Carefully slide out the faulty electric spool slice.
Prep for Installation
Clean the mating surfaces on the adjacent valve slices. Always install new O-rings/seals between the slices to prevent internal cross-leaks.
Install New Valve
Insert the replacement spool valve slice, reinsert the mounting bolts, and torque them to the OEM specification found in your service manual.
Reconnect and Calibrate
Plug the 4-pin connector back in. Turn on the tractor and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.40.1F code. Test the remote for proper operation and check the valve block for leaks.
