A.40.23

Massey Ferguson A.40.23 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU) or Hydraulic Control Unit / Armrest Module: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue

Issue description

Indicates that the tractor's onboard diagnostic system has detected a malfunction, connection problem, or blockage on the 4th external hydraulic remote (spool valve) circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Attempt to delete the error code from the control unit dashboard to determine if it was a temporary glitch or a hard fault.

  2. Check the electrical connector at the #4 hydraulic valve solenoid. Look for an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to power.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness for rub points or damage between the valve block and the control module.

  4. Test the solenoid coil resistance and verify ground integrity.

  5. Check if the #4 valve is physically stuck or blocked. The control unit will throw a code if the valve is commanded to move but is mechanically jammed.

  6. Verify that the system hydraulic pressure is within spec and that the hydraulic fluid is clean and at the proper level, as contamination can cause the valve to stick.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Relieve Pressure

Relieve all hydraulic system pressure by cycling the remote levers/buttons before opening any lines.

  3. Locate the Valve

Locate the external hydraulic valve block at the rear of the tractor and identify the slice/spool corresponding to Valve #4.

  4. Inspect and Clean

Disconnect the electrical harness from the #4 solenoid. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner. If the wiring is damaged, repair the harness.

  5. Unlock/Replace Solenoid

If the valve is mechanically blocked, attempt to manually unlock it. If the solenoid coil has failed its resistance test, remove the retaining nut/screws and slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem. Install the new solenoid valve/coil.

  6. Replace the Spool Slice (If necessary)

If the internal spool is scored or the entire slice has failed, unbolt the #4 electric spool slice from the hydraulic block stack. Install the replacement slice, ensuring all O-rings are properly seated. (Note: A complete new electric spool slice may need to be programmed to the tractor's ECU by a dealer).

  7. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness, reconnect the battery, and top off the hydraulic fluid if any was lost.

  8. Test

Start the tractor, clear any remaining dashboard codes, and test the #4 remote function for proper operation.
