A.41.21

Massey Ferguson A.41.21 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) control module or Armrest/Spool Valve Controller: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue

Issue description

Connection problem, electrical fault, or calibration failure on the electro-hydraulic spool valve number 4. The system detects that the valve spool cannot be brought back to neutral, has an open/short circuit, or is experiencing an implausible signal/amp draw.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a visual and electrical inspection of the wiring harness and connector at External Hydraulic Valve 4 for corrosion, loose pins, or damaged wires.

  2. Test the solenoid for an open circuit, short circuit to ground, or abnormal amp draw (check if the LED on the electronic valve is flashing red).

  3. Verify the spool position sensor value via the tractor's diagnostic screen or linkage calculator to see if the valve is physically stuck or failing to return to the neutral position.

  4. Check for mechanical binding, such as worn valve spool detents or debris causing the valve to jam internally.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Turn off the tractor and relieve all hydraulic system pressure before servicing the valve block.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the rear hydraulic control block around Valve 4 to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, repair the harness or replace the connector plug at Valve 4. Clear the code and retest.

  4. Solenoid / Valve Replacement

If the solenoid is burnt out or the spool is internally damaged, remove the retaining bolts for Spool Valve 4. Depending on the severity and the model, replace just the solenoid coil, the detent kit, or the entire electro-hydraulic spool valve 'slice'.

  5. Reassembly & Fluid Check

Install the new valve/solenoid using new O-rings. Torque to OEM specifications. Top up the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) and replace the hydraulic filter if the fluid is contaminated.

  6. Calibration

Once the new valve is installed, it must be calibrated to the tractor's EHR system using the in-cab diagnostic screen or a dealer laptop, otherwise, the system will throw a 'Valve Spool Not Calibrated' error.
