A.42.18

Massey Ferguson A.42.18 – Main tractor controller / Electronic implement control system: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue

Issue description

Electrical or connection problem with the 4th external hydraulic remote/spool valve, such as an open circuit, short circuit to earth, short circuit between cables, fast decay error, or current level error. The valve may default into a neutral position.

Check the cause

  1. Check the hydraulic fluid level and condition (look for dark, burnt, or milky fluid indicating water contamination)

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connections to Solenoid Valve 4 for open circuits, short circuits to ground, or short circuits between cables

  3. Perform a visual inspection of external hydraulic valve 4 (spool valve) for external leaks, damaged O-rings, or worn seals

  4. Test the system pressure with a hydraulic gauge to pinpoint whether the issue is a valve restriction, a failing pump, or a pressure loss

  5. Ensure the hydraulic filter is not partially blocked, which can restrict flow to the system

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Ensure the tractor is turned off and relieve all hydraulic pressure before servicing the system.

  2. Drain Fluid (If Necessary)

If the hydraulic fluid is contaminated or degraded, drain the fluid from the system.

  3. Wiring Repair

Disconnect the electrical harness to External Hydraulic Valve 4. Clean the contacts and repair any damaged wiring (shorts or open circuits) found during the diagnostic phase.

  4. Valve Removal

If the solenoid or the valve itself is faulty, remove the spool valve assembly.

  5. Seal/Valve Replacement

Replace worn O-rings and seals using a spool valve repair kit, or replace the entire solenoid valve 4 unit if the internal magnet output stage or position sensor has failed.

  6. Reinstallation

Reinstall the valve block and securely reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Filter Replacement

Replace the hydraulic filter (recommended routine maintenance every 300–500 hours).

  8. Refill Fluid

Refill the system with clean OEM-approved UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil).

  9. Testing

Start the tractor, test the operation of remote valve 4, and check for leaks. Finally, clear the DTC using a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool.
