A.42.1B

Massey Ferguson A.42.1B – Onboard diagnostic system: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue

Issue description

The code indicates a malfunction, connection problem, or performance failure specifically isolated to External Hydraulic Valve 4 (the 4th rear remote spool valve). This can be triggered by an electrical connection problem at the valve's solenoid, a stuck directional spool valve, or a pressure/flow discrepancy caused by contamination.

Check the cause

  1. Implement & Coupler Test: Try the implement on another spool valve, or try a known-good implement on Valve 4. If the problem stays with Valve 4, the issue is on the tractor side.

  2. Inspect Quick-Release Couplers: Check the couplers on Valve 4 for dirt, rust, worn tips, or damaged balls. A coupler that fails to open fully can restrict flow and cause the valve to stick or log a fault.

  3. Fluid Inspection: Check the hydraulic fluid (UTTO). Old, dirty, or milky oil is a major cause of sticky spool valves and poor remote performance.

  4. Electrical Connection Check: Inspect the wiring harness and connector going to External Valve 4. Connection problems on hydraulic valves are a primary trigger for this code.

  5. Visual Leak Check: Look for visible fluid leaks around the valve block, which can reduce system efficiency and cause pressure drops.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Ensure the tractor is turned off and relieve all hydraulic system pressure before disconnecting any lines.

  2. Drain/Catch Fluid

Place a catch pan beneath the rear remote valve block, as hydraulic fluid will escape during removal.

  3. Disconnect Electricals

Unplug the electrical connector from the Valve 4 solenoid.

  4. Remove Couplers & Lines

Disconnect the quick-release couplers and any hydraulic lines attached to the specific valve.

  5. Unbolt the Valve

Remove the securing bolts holding the Valve 4 assembly to the hydraulic base plate or valve stack.

  6. Clean and Inspect

Check the valve chamber for debris or metal shavings. If the spool is jammed due to internal wear, the valve must be replaced.

  7. Install New Valve

Mount the replacement valve, ensuring all O-rings and seals are properly seated. Torque the mounting bolts to factory specifications.

  8. Reassemble

Reconnect the hydraulic lines, quick-release couplers, and the electrical harness.

  9. Fluid & Filter Maintenance

It is highly recommended to change the hydraulic filter and top off the system with clean, correct-grade UTTO fluid to prevent the new valve from sticking.

  10. Clear Codes

Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the DTC and test the remote valve for proper operation.

Parts you might need

(8)
  • External Hydraulic Control Valve (Spool Valve)

OEM part numbers vary heavily by the specific Tier 4 model. Modern 4700-7700 series tractors require the specific electronic proportional valve found in the AGCO Parts Books.

  • External Hydraulic Control Valve (Spool Valve)

    1617141M91

    Older mechanical Massey Ferguson valve.

  • External Hydraulic Control Valve (Spool Valve)

    1696239M93

    Older mechanical Massey Ferguson valve.

  • External Hydraulic Control Valve (Spool Valve)

    1862486M96

    Older mechanical Massey Ferguson valve.

  • Quick-Release Hydraulic Couplers (Male/Female)

Generic replacement parts; ensure they match the tractor's flow rating.

  • Coupler Dust Caps & Seals

Essential for keeping contamination out of the new valve.

  • Hydraulic Filter

    OEM AGCO filter recommended.

  • Hydraulic Fluid

    Universal Tractor Transmission Oil (UTTO).
