Massey Ferguson A.43.21 – Autotronic 5 / Transmission Control Unit (TCU): External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue
Issue description
Indicates a potential fault, connection problem, or circuit failure (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power) specifically affecting the 4th external hydraulic remote valve. When this code triggers, the affected valve is typically blocked by the system for safety.

Check the cause
Check the hydraulic fluid level and condition (look for dark, burnt, or milky fluid indicating water contamination).
Inspect the solenoid connector for External Valve 4, check for harness rub points, test coil resistance, and verify ground integrity.
Check for a partially blocked hydraulic filter that could be restricting flow to the valve block.
Attempt to delete the error code from the dashboard and restart the engine to confirm if it is a hard fault.
Test the system pressure with a hydraulic gauge to pinpoint whether the issue is isolated to Valve 4 or a broader pump/relief valve issue.
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Ensure the tractor is off, implements are lowered, and hydraulic pressure is fully relieved before opening the system.
Fluid Maintenance
If the fluid was degraded during the diagnostic check, drain the hydraulic fluid and replace the hydraulic filter.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the external hydraulic valve block (often assembled directly on the lift cover or rear axle).
Address Wiring
If the wiring harness was found to be damaged during diagnostics, repair the broken wires or replace the solenoid connector.
Unstick the Valve
If the valve spool is mechanically stuck, you can sometimes release it by manually moving the control valve lever back and forth.
Rebuild or Replace
If the valve is internally leaking or the solenoid has failed, remove the Valve 4 assembly. Rebuild the chamber using a valve repair kit (replacing the inlet/outlet valves, springs, and O-rings) or install a completely new directional control valve/solenoid unit.
Refill and Test
Refill the system with OEM UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil) fluid. Start the tractor, clear the codes, and test the remote hydraulic response to ensure Valve 4 operates smoothly without throwing code 0A.43.21.
