Massey Ferguson A.43.23 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU) or Hydraulic Control Module: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue

Issue description

The tractor's onboard diagnostic system has detected a malfunction in the operation or electrical circuit of the 4th rear external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve). The underlying condition is typically an electrical fault with the valve's proportional solenoid, such as an open circuit, a short circuit to ground, a short between cables, or a calibration failure.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) is at the correct level and is not degraded or contaminated with water (milky appearance)

  2. Inspect the rear hydraulic valve block (specifically the 4th remote) for external leaks, damaged quick couplers, or physical damage to the solenoid housing

  3. Disconnect the electrical harness at External Valve 4 and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back terminals. Check the wiring harness for chafing or breaks

  4. Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the Valve 4 solenoid coil and compare the reading to a known good valve (e.g., Valve 3). An infinite reading indicates an open circuit, while zero indicates a short

  5. If wiring tests fine, temporarily swap the solenoid coil from Valve 3 to Valve 4. If the fault code changes to indicate an issue with Valve 3, the solenoid coil is the definitive culprit

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements to the ground to remove load from the system, and turn off the engine.

  2. Relieve Pressure

    Cycle the hydraulic remote levers/switches inside the cab to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

  3. Disconnect Electricals

    Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the External Hydraulic Valve 4 solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid Coil

    Remove the retaining nut at the end of the valve stem and slide the faulty solenoid coil off the cartridge. (If only the coil is faulty, install the new coil now and skip to step 7).

  5. Remove the Valve Cartridge (if necessary)

    If the mechanical cartridge is stuck or leaking internally, use a wrench to carefully unscrew the valve cartridge from the hydraulic block. Have a catch pan ready, as some hydraulic fluid will escape.

  6. Install the New Cartridge

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new valve cartridge with clean hydraulic fluid. Thread it into the valve block and torque it to the manufacturer's specification.

  7. Reassembly

    Slide the new solenoid coil over the cartridge stem and secure it with the retaining nut. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Fluid Top-Up

    Check the hydraulic fluid dipstick/sight glass and top up the UTTO fluid to replace any lost during the repair.

  9. Clear Codes & Test

    Start the tractor, test the operation of the 4th remote valve, and use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.43.23 fault code from the system.
