A.4X.18

Massey Ferguson A.4X.18 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Controller or Autotronic / Armrest Control Module: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue

Issue description

The tractor's onboard diagnostic system has detected a malfunction in the 4th electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) spool valve. This is typically caused by a connection problem, a failed solenoid, a faulty spool position sensor, or mechanical binding preventing the valve from returning to neutral.

Applies to these machines

  • 5710SL
  • 5711SL
  • 5712SL
  • 5713SL
  • T4
  • 4707
  • 4708

  • 7620
  • 7622
  • 7624
  • 7626
  • 7714-7726S

Check the cause

  1. Check Valve LEDs on the electronic valve block at the rear of the tractor (solid red means power, green means input to move, flashing indicates a localized fault)

  2. Inspect the external linkage to ensure it is in the center position and nothing is physically jamming the remote

  3. Inspect the wiring harness leading to Valve 4 for chafed wires, moisture ingress in the connector, or bent pins causing an open circuit or abnormal amp draw

  4. Check Autotronic sub-codes by turning the key on, pushing and releasing the clutch to clear the right screen, then holding the up arrow key to access DC and TC error codes for specific spool position sensor values

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic levers/buttons to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent short circuits during removal.

  3. Remove the Valve

Locate Spool Valve 4 at the rear remote stack. Disconnect the electrical harness. Unbolt the valve section from the hydraulic block (be prepared to catch residual hydraulic fluid).

  4. Mechanical Detent Fix (Alternative to full replacement)

On some models (like the 7600 series), the spool valve detents wear out, causing the valve to stick and throw position errors. Instead of replacing the entire valve, you can source and install replacement detents and modify them to fit.

  5. Replace the Valve

If the solenoid or internal position sensor has failed, the entire valve slice must be replaced, as Massey Ferguson typically does not sell the electronic solenoids separately from the valve body for these newer EHR systems.

  6. Re-calibration

After installing the new valve, the spool valve must be re-calibrated (often referred to as "Valve Spool Not Calibrated" or "Neutral Set point" calibration) using the tractor's diagnostic software or onboard terminal.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Electrohydraulic Spool Valve (Valve 4 Slice)

OEM complete valve assembly. Exact part numbers vary heavily by the specific tractor model and hydraulic pump configuration.

  • Spool Valve Detent Kit

Available as a repair kit for 7600 series tractors to fix mechanical sticking without replacing the whole valve.

  • Wiring Harness / Pigtail Connector

If the connector is corroded, a generic Bosch/Deutsch solenoid pigtail may be required to splice into the factory harness.
