Massey Ferguson A.4X.19 – Tractor Electronic Control Unit (TECU) or Autotronic / Hydraulic Control Module: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue

Indicates a malfunction in the 4th rear remote spool valve circuit. The underlying condition is typically an electrical connection problem (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power in the solenoid circuit), a faulty solenoid coil, or a mechanically stuck/binding spool valve that the controller cannot actuate properly.

   Visual Wiring Inspection: Check the wiring harness and the electrical connector at External Hydraulic Valve 4 (located at the rear remote stack). Look for rubbed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Solenoid Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the Valve 4 solenoid coil. Compare it to a known good valve (like Valve 3) to rule out an open or shorted coil.

   Ground Integrity Check: Ensure the ground connection for the hydraulic valve block is clean and secure.

   Mechanical Binding Check: Check if the valve spool is physically stuck. Debris in the hydraulic fluid can cause the spool to jam.

   Fluid Inspection: Check the hydraulic fluid level and condition. Contaminated fluid can cause erratic valve behavior and pressure issues.

   Safety First

   Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements to the ground, and turn off the engine.

   Relieve Pressure

   Move the hydraulic remote levers back and forth to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

   Disconnect Electronics

   Locate External Valve 4 at the rear remote stack and carefully disconnect its electrical harness.

   Remove the Solenoid/Valve

   If diagnostics pointed to a failed solenoid coil, unbolt the retaining nut/screws on the end of the spool and slide the old coil off. If the entire valve section is faulty, remove the tie-bolts holding the valve stack together and carefully extract the Valve 4 section. Ensure the area is completely clean so no dirt enters the hydraulic system.

   Clean and Inspect

   Inspect the mating surfaces and the spool for scoring or metal debris.

   Install New Parts

   Install the new solenoid coil or valve section. Always use new O-rings/seals between the valve sections to prevent internal or external leaks.

   Reassembly

   Torque the valve stack bolts to OEM specifications and reconnect the electrical harness.

   Test and Clear Codes

   Top up the hydraulic fluid if any was lost. Start the tractor, test the remote valve for proper operation and leaks, and use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the DTC from the system.
