Massey Ferguson A.4X.1B – Autotronic control unit, EHR (Electronic Hitch Control) linkage calculator, or Mid Mount Valve Module / Hydraulic Control Unit: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue

Fault detected in the circuit, signal, or mechanical operation of the 4th remote electrohydraulic spool valve. Indicates an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to power, or a mechanical condition where the valve does not return to neutral or respond correctly to the operator's input.

   Check the hydraulic oil and transmission filters for blockages or heavily contaminated oil, which can cause spool valves to become slow, weak, or stuck.

   Inspect the solenoid connector on External Valve 4 for corrosion, loose pins, or moisture.

   Check the wiring harness leading to the valve for rub points, breaks, or shorts to ground.

   Test the solenoid coil resistance with a multimeter and verify ground integrity.

   Check the LED indicator on the electronic valve head (if equipped). Red indicates power, green indicates receiving input to move. Flashing red indicates an internal fault or missing command.

   Verify mechanically if the valve is physically stuck or if the main hydraulic valve is failing to return to the neutral position.

   Depressurize

   Relieve all hydraulic system pressure before starting work.

   Disconnect

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the affected spool valve (Valve 4).

   Solenoid Replacement (If Electrical)

   If diagnostics point to a failed coil, remove the retaining nut on the solenoid, slide the old coil off, and install the new solenoid coil.

   Valve Slice Removal (If Mechanical/Internal)

   If the valve itself is leaking, sticking, or the electronic head unit has failed, remove the threaded rods holding the spool valve block together.

   Clean and Reseal

   Remove the spool valve slice. Clean the seal surfaces on the spool valve. Replace the internal seals and plates.

   Replace Spool Slice

   If the spool slice is internally damaged or the electronic head unit has failed, replace the entire electric spool slice.

   Reassembly

   Reassemble the valve block using the correct threaded rods (length depends on the number of spool valves). Torque the hydraulic unions to the manufacturer's specifications.

   Programming

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Note: A complete new electric spool slice may need to be programmed or calibrated to the tractor's control unit using a dealer diagnostic tool.

   Test

   Start the tractor, cycle the hydraulic controls, and ensure the error code clears and the implement responds normally.
