A.4X.23

Massey Ferguson A.4X.23 – Onboard diagnostic system: External Hydraulic Valve 4 Issue

Issue description

This code indicates a malfunction or fault within the fourth external hydraulic remote/spool valve circuit. The underlying condition is frequently an electrical connection failure, a sticking spool valve, or a pressure restriction at this specific remote.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at External Hydraulic Valve 4 for corrosion, loose pins, or broken wires (electrical connection problems are a primary cause).

  2. Check the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) level and condition, looking for dirty or contaminated oil.

  3. Inspect the hydraulic and transmission filters, as blocked filters can restrict flow and cause valve faults.

  4. Inspect the quick couplers at the rear remotes for blockages or damage.

  5. Check the hydraulic hoses for wear or internal collapse.

  6. Test if the spool valve is physically stuck or if the relief valve is faulty, resulting in slow, weak, or dead hydraulic response.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, shut off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Relieve hydraulic pressure

Relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system by cycling the remote valve controls.

  3. Clean work area

Clean the area around the external hydraulic valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect electrical connector

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from External Hydraulic Valve 4.

  5. Disconnect hoses and couplers

Disconnect the hydraulic hoses and quick couplers from the affected valve block. (Note: Do not use sealant on O-ring or flare adapter threads during reassembly).

  6. Remove faulty valve

Unbolt the faulty spool valve from the valve mounting bracket or valve stack.

  7. Install replacement valve

Install the replacement hydraulic valve, ensuring all O-rings and seals are properly seated.

  8. Reconnect components

Reconnect the hydraulic hoses, quick couplers, and the electrical connector.

  9. Replace filter and fluid

Replace the hydraulic filter and top off the system with clean, OEM-spec UTTO hydraulic fluid.

  10. Test operation

Start the tractor, allow the hydraulic fluid to warm up, and test the remote valve for proper operation and leaks.
