Massey Ferguson A.51.18 – Autotronic 5: External Hydraulic Valve 5 Issue
Issue description
Generated by the tractor's onboard diagnostic system when it detects a connection problem, an out-of-range signal, or a circuit issue on the 5th external hydraulic valve. Underlying conditions include an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power in the valve's solenoid circuit; the main hydraulic valve failing to return to the neutral position; or low voltage to the electronic hitch/hydraulic (EHR) lever position.

Check the cause
Verify battery voltage during cranking and check the charging system, as low voltage events can trigger false hydraulic codes
Inspect the wiring harness leading to External Hydraulic Valve 5 for rub points, frayed wires, or corrosion
Check the solenoid connector at Valve 5 for a secure fit
Test the coil resistance of the Valve 5 solenoid to check for an open circuit or a short to ground
Verify if the hydraulic distributor is physically stuck and failing to return to the neutral position
Repair steps
Retrieve and Verify Code
Use a compatible diagnostic tool to confirm code 0A.51.18 is active. (On some Autotronic 5 consoles, faults can also be read via a flashing self-diagnostic indicator light).
Resolve Electrical Faults
If the diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring or a corroded connector at Valve 5, repair the harness or replace the connector pigtail.
Replace the Solenoid/Valve
If the solenoid fails the resistance test or the valve is mechanically stuck and will not return to neutral, replace the electric spool slice/valve assembly.
Clear the Code
Delete the error code from the control unit dashboard or via the diagnostic tool.
Reactivate the Valve
Stop and re-run the engine. The system blocks the affected valve when the code is active; restarting the tractor after clearing the code will unlock the valve if the repair was successful.
