A.51.28

Massey Ferguson A.51.28 – Electronic Hydraulic Remotes (EHR) or Tractor Control Module (TCM): External Hydraulic Valve 5 Issue

Issue description

The tractor's onboard diagnostic system has detected a malfunction, electrical connection problem, or operational failure within the circuit of the fifth external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the #5 hydraulic valve section for corrosion, loose pins, or wire chafing

  2. Check the hydraulic oil level, ensure the correct fluid is being used, and inspect hydraulic filters for blockages that could cause pressure drops

  3. Inspect the hydraulic couplers on the #5 remote for internal damage, blockage, or non-matching fittings that could cause the system to deadhead

  4. Check for a sticking spool within the valve block (mechanical binding)

  5. Verify relief valve pressures using a hydraulic pressure gauge to rule out a broader pump or system pressure issue

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize

Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic remote levers/controls to relieve all hydraulic system pressure before starting work.

  2. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical harness connector from the #5 External Hydraulic Valve actuator.

  3. Remove Lines

Disconnect the hydraulic hoses and couplers attached to that specific valve section. Have a bucket ready to catch residual hydraulic fluid.

  4. Dismount Valve

Unbolt the #5 valve section from the main hydraulic manifold block / lift cover assembly.

  5. Rebuild or Replace

To Rebuild: Disassemble the spool valve, clean it thoroughly, and replace the internal O-rings, seals, and thrust washers using an OEM spool valve repair kit. Ensure the spool moves freely without sticking. To Replace: Install a new Bosch/Rexroth EHR valve block section.

  6. Reassemble

Bolt the valve back into the manifold stack, reconnect the hydraulic lines, and plug in the electrical harness.

  7. Test

Top off the hydraulic fluid, start the tractor to bleed the system, and use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.51.28 DTC. Test the #5 remote for proper operation.
