Massey Ferguson A.52.21 – Hydraulic Control Module / Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote (EHR) controller: External Hydraulic Valve 5 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction in the 5th external hydraulic remote valve circuit. This is typically triggered by an electrical fault (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power in the solenoid circuit) or a mechanical condition (such as a sticking spool valve or rusted detents) that causes erratic pressure, loss of hydraulic function, or a signal that is out of range. When this code is thrown, the system may disable the valve for safety.

Check the cause

  1. Check the electrical harness leading to the Valve 5 solenoid for rub points, frayed wires, or corrosion at the connector

  2. Measure the coil resistance of the Valve 5 solenoid with a multimeter to check for an open circuit or short, and verify ground integrity

  3. Perform a swap test by moving the electrical connector from Valve 5 to another working valve (e.g., Valve 4). If the fault code changes to the other valve, the issue is in the wiring harness or controller. If the code remains on Valve 5, the solenoid or valve itself is faulty

  4. Check the physical spool valve levers and detents for rust or sticking, which is a known mechanical issue that prevents proper actuation

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, and relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system. Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the rear remote valve stack (usually mounted directly on the lift cover or rear axle housing) and identify External Valve 5.

  3. Disconnect Electronics

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the Valve 5 solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid/Valve

    If only the solenoid is faulty: Unbolt the solenoid coil from the valve body and replace it. If the spool valve is sticking (rusted detents): Remove the entire spool valve section. Note: On some models (like the 6400 series), Massey Ferguson only sells the complete valve assembly. However, a common field modification is to purchase detents for the 7600 series and modify them to fit, saving significant money.

  5. Installation

    Install the new solenoid, detent kit, or complete spool valve assembly. Ensure all O-rings and seals are replaced and lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid. Torque mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

  7. Fluid Check

    Check the transmission/hydraulic fluid level and top up if any was lost during the repair.

  8. Clear Codes

    Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the A.52.21 / 0A.50.21 DTC from the system. Test the hydraulic remote function to ensure erratic pressure or sticking has been resolved.
