A.52.23

Massey Ferguson A.52.23 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU) or Autotronic control module: External Hydraulic Valve 5 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction in the circuit or mechanical operation of the tractor's 5th external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve). This typically points to an electrical issue (open circuit, short to ground/power), a sensor signal out of range, or a mechanical/hydraulic condition like a stuck spool valve, blocked flow, or low pressure.

Check the cause

  1. Check the hydraulic fluid level and condition; inspect for dirty oil or a blocked hydraulic/transmission filter that can restrict flow.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the 5th external hydraulic valve solenoid for rub points, disconnected plugs, or damaged wires.

  3. Test the solenoid connector for proper voltage and check the coil's resistance and ground integrity to rule out an open or shorted circuit.

  4. Check if the valve is physically stuck or if the quick couplers are blocked or damaged, causing dead or weak hydraulic response.

  5. Perform a spool leakage check by connecting a hydraulic hand pump to the valve port and pressurizing it to 2500 psi to see if it holds pressure.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Always relieve the hydraulic system pressure and disconnect the tractor's battery before starting work.

  2. Locate and Clean

Locate the 5th external hydraulic valve on the rear remote stack. Clean the surrounding area thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty valve's solenoid.

  4. Removal

Unbolt and remove the solenoid valve assembly from the hydraulic block.

  5. Inspect

Check the valve body for foreign matter, damaged O-rings, or a stuck spool. If the internal bore is scored or damaged, the entire valve section must be replaced.

  6. Installation

Install the new solenoid or valve assembly. Ensure all O-rings are seated correctly.

  7. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. Top up the hydraulic fluid with clean oil to the proper level.

  8. Clear Codes

Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the A.52.23 DTC from the system and test the remote valve for proper operation.
