Massey Ferguson A.53.18 – Rear Chassis Module (SCC) or Tractor Hydraulic Controller: External Hydraulic Valve 5 Issue
Issue description
The tractor's onboard diagnostic system has detected an electrical fault in the circuit controlling the 5th rear Selective Control Valve (SCV). The underlying condition is typically an open circuit, a short circuit to ground, a short between cables, or a current level/fast decay error at the solenoid.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connector at External Hydraulic Valve 5 (located at the rear SCV stack) for corrosion, moisture ingress, or damaged pins.
Verify the tractor's overall battery voltage. Low or spiking system voltage can trigger false solenoid errors.
Use a multimeter to check the solenoid coil for an open circuit or a short circuit to ground.
Swap the solenoid coil from Valve 5 with an adjacent working valve (e.g., Valve 4 or 6). If the fault code changes to the new valve location, the solenoid coil is defective. If the code remains A.53.18, the issue is in the wiring harness or the ECU.
Repair steps
Turn off the tractor, relieve all hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the battery.
Locate the rear SCV valve block and identify Valve 5.
Disconnect the electrical connector to the Valve 5 solenoid.
If the wiring is damaged, repair or replace the affected harness section.
If the solenoid coil failed the diagnostic test, remove the retaining nut/bolt at the end of the valve spool and slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge.
Clean the cartridge shaft, slide the new solenoid coil into place, and secure it with the retaining nut.
Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring a tight and weather-sealed fit.
Reconnect the battery and start the tractor.
Use a compatible diagnostic tool (such as the AGCO EDT) to clear the A.53.18 / 0A.53.18 fault code.
Test the operation of the 5th remote valve to confirm the repair.
