A.53.22

Massey Ferguson A.53.22 – Implement/Hydraulic ECU or Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) / Autotronic unit: External Hydraulic Valve 5 Issue

Issue description

The tractor's diagnostic system has detected an electrical or mechanical malfunction in the 5th auxiliary hydraulic spool valve (remote valve) circuit, preventing it from actuating correctly.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the spool valve cable/wiring harness leading to Valve 5 for chafing or breaks.

  2. Disconnect the 4-pin electrical connector at the electric spool slice and check for bent pins, moisture, or corrosion.

  3. Test the solenoid coil resistance to ensure it is within OEM specifications and verify that voltage is reaching the valve when commanded from the cab controls.

  4. Check for external hydraulic leaks around the slice or mechanical binding in the spool valve that might cause the solenoid to overdraw current or fail to actuate.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Lower all hydraulic implements to the ground, turn off the tractor, and relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system. Disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate Valve 5

Identify the 5th auxiliary remote valve slice in the rear hydraulic valve stack.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the 4-pin electrical connector from the faulty electric spool slice.

  4. Remove the Valve/Solenoid

Unbolt the faulty electric spool slice from the valve block assembly. Have a catch pan ready for residual hydraulic fluid.

  5. Install New Part

Mount the replacement electric spool slice (ensure O-rings/seals are properly seated and lubricated). If the issue was diagnosed as a wiring fault, replace the spool valve cable instead.

  6. Reconnect and Calibrate

Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery. Note: Replacement electric spool slices (like the Rexroth units) often require programming/calibration to the tractor's ECU using a dealer diagnostic tool before they will function.

  7. Test

Start the tractor, check the valve stack for leaks, and actuate the 5th remote valve to confirm proper operation. Clear the DTC using a compatible diagnostic tool.
