A.63.18

Massey Ferguson A.63.18 – Implement/Hydraulic ECU or Tractor Control Unit: External Hydraulic Valve 6 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction associated with the tractor's 6th external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve). The underlying condition is typically a connection problem to the valve's solenoid, a stuck/jammed valve due to internal wear or debris, or a restriction in hydraulic fluid flow.

Check the cause

  1. Check the hydraulic fluid level and ensure the hydraulic/transmission filter is not clogged, as a blocked filter restricts oil flow causing valves to become slow, weak, or unresponsive.

  2. Look for visible fluid loss around the External Hydraulic Valve 6 block, which can reduce system efficiency and trigger faults.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at Valve 6 for corrosion, damage, or a loose connection.

  4. Check if the valve is physically unresponsive or if the hydraulic couplers are blocked, which indicates sticking or jamming due to debris or internal wear.

Repair steps

  1. Basic Service

Change the hydraulic/transmission filter and top up the hydraulic fluid with OEM-spec UTTO (Universal Tractor Transmission Oil), as contaminated fluid is a primary cause of valve failure.

  2. Electrical Repair

If the diagnostic check revealed a wiring issue, clean the electrical contacts on the Valve 6 solenoid and secure the connection.

  3. Valve Cleaning/Resealing

If the valve is sticking, remove the spool valve assembly. Clean out any internal debris and replace the O-rings/seals if there are external leaks.

  4. Valve Replacement

If the valve is internally scored, the solenoid has failed, or cleaning does not resolve the issue, replace the entire External Hydraulic Valve 6 (spool slice).

  5. System Flush

If the old valve failed due to heavy contamination (e.g., metal shavings), flush the hydraulic system to prevent the new valve from suffering the same fate.

  6. Clear Codes

Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic interface tool to clear the 0A.63.18 code and test the remote valve operation. Note that some electronic spool slices may require programming to the tractor upon installation.
