A.70.28

Massey Ferguson A.70.28 – Basic Control Unit ECU (A050): External Hydraulic Valve 7 Issue

Issue description

This indicates a malfunction, electrical connection problem, or operational failure associated with the 7th external hydraulic remote/spool valve on the tractor. The system has detected that the valve is either not responding to commands, has an open/short in its solenoid circuit, or is failing to achieve the commanded hydraulic flow/pressure.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the #7 external hydraulic valve for rub points, and check the solenoid connector for corrosion.

  2. Test the solenoid coil resistance and ground integrity.

  3. Check the spool valve detents for rust or sticking, which can prevent proper actuation.

  4. Inspect the hydraulic/transmission oil filter and oil condition for contamination that could cause weak or dead hydraulics.

  5. Perform a spool leakage check by connecting a hydraulic hand pump to the valve port and pressurizing to 2500 psi to see if it holds pressure.

Repair steps

  1. Stabilize and Isolate

Turn off the tractor, stabilize electrical power, and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system before working on the valves.

  2. Wiring/Solenoid Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed an open or shorted circuit, repair the damaged wiring harness. If the solenoid coil is dead, replace the solenoid on the #7 valve slice.

  3. Detent Repair

If rusted or sticking, remove the retaining screws on the detent assembly at the end of the spool valve. Remove the rusted detent components and clean the valve housing. Install a new detent kit. Apply Loctite Screw Lock (e.g., Powerpart No. 3405 350 M1) to the retaining screws during reassembly.

  4. Valve Replacement

If internally failed (heavily scored or leaking internally), disconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical connectors from the #7 valve. Unbolt the valve slice from the hydraulic stack, taking care not to lose the O-rings between the slices. Install the new external hydraulic valve, fit new O-rings, torque the tie-bolts to spec, and reconnect the lines and harness.

  5. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.70.28 code and verify the #7 remote operates smoothly.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Spool Valve Detent Kit

    1672123M91

Used to rebuild sticking/rusted detents without having to replace the entire valve assembly

  • External Hydraulic Valve Assembly (Spool Valve)

Exact OEM part number varies heavily depending on the specific tractor model and whether it is a manual or electronic EHR valve stack. Often sold as a complete slice by Massey Ferguson

  • Hydraulic / Transmission Oil Filter

Replace if hydraulic oil is contaminated

  • Hydraulic Coupler Seal Kit / O-rings

Required when reassembling the valve stack
