A.73.20

Massey Ferguson A.73.20 – Implement and hydraulic control module: External Hydraulic Valve 7 Issue

Issue description

The onboard diagnostic system has detected a malfunction in the circuit controlling the 7th external hydraulic remote valve. This is typically an electrical fault, such as a connection problem, an open circuit, or a short circuit in the valve's solenoid or wiring harness, preventing the valve from operating correctly.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector leading to External Hydraulic Valve 7 on the rear remote block for frayed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

  2. Use a multimeter to test the solenoid on Valve 7 for proper resistance. Check the wiring harness for continuity and ensure there are no short circuits to ground or power.

  3. Temporarily swap the electrical connector from Valve 7 to an adjacent known-working valve (e.g., Valve 6). If the fault code changes to the other valve, the issue is with the wiring or ECU. If the fault remains on Valve 7, the solenoid/valve itself has failed.

  4. Ensure the hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and free of debris, as contaminated fluid can cause electronic spool valves to stick.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Relieve Pressure

Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system by cycling the hydraulic controls.

  3. Locate the Valve

Locate External Hydraulic Valve 7 on the rear hydraulic valve stack.

  4. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the faulty valve's solenoid.

  5. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt or debris from entering the hydraulic system when the valve is removed.

  6. Removal

Remove the retaining bolts holding the valve or solenoid cartridge in place and carefully extract it.

  7. Installation

Lubricate the O-rings on the new valve/solenoid with clean hydraulic fluid. Insert the new part and torque the retaining bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.

  8. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness to the new valve. Reconnect the tractor's battery.

  9. Testing

Start the tractor, check the rear valve block for any hydraulic leaks, and top off the hydraulic fluid if necessary. Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the A.73.20 / 0A.73.20 fault code and test the operation of the remote valve.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • External Hydraulic Proportional Valve / Electronic Spool Valve Solenoid

Exact OEM part number depends heavily on the tractor's specific hydraulic configuration and serial number.
