Massey Ferguson A.81.13 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote controller) or Vehicle Control Unit: External Hydraulic Valve 8 Issue

Issue description

The onboard diagnostic system has detected a malfunction on the 8th external hydraulic remote/spool valve. This is typically caused by an electrical connection problem (such as a short or open circuit at the valve's solenoid), a pressure irregularity, or a physically sticking spool valve preventing proper operation.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the cable harness and electrical connector leading to External Hydraulic Valve 8's solenoid for frayed wires, loose pins, or corrosion (primary trigger for this code).

  2. Check the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) level and condition, as contaminated oil can cause valves to stick.

  3. Inspect the hydraulic and transmission filters for blockages, especially if they have not been changed in the last 300-500 hours.

  4. Check the hydraulic couplers and hoses connected to Valve 8 for damage, leaks, or blockages.

  5. Test the spool valve to determine if it is physically sticking (dead hydraulics) or if the solenoid has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

    Lower all hydraulic implements to the ground and turn off the tractor to relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate External Hydraulic Valve 8 on the rear hydraulic block manifold.

  3. Disconnect Electricals

    Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the valve's solenoid.

  4. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt and contaminants from entering the hydraulic system during removal.

  5. Remove Lines

    Disconnect the hydraulic hoses/lines attached to the valve.

  6. Remove the Valve

    Unbolt the spool valve assembly from the hydraulic block.

  7. Rebuild or Replace

    Depending on the diagnosis, either rebuild the valve using an OEM spool valve repair kit (replacing internal seals and O-rings) or replace the entire valve assembly.

  8. Reinstall

    Mount the repaired or new valve back onto the hydraulic block and torque the bolts to manufacturer specifications.

  9. Reconnect

    Reconnect the hydraulic lines and the electrical harness.

  10. Fluid and Bleed

    Top up the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) as needed. Start the tractor, operate the valve to bleed any trapped air, and check for leaks.

  11. Clear Codes

    Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the A.81.13 fault code from the system.
