A.81.24

Massey Ferguson A.81.24 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU): External Hydraulic Valve 8 Issue

Issue description

A malfunction within the 8th external hydraulic remote valve circuit, typically caused by an electrical fault (such as a failed solenoid, wiring short, or open circuit) or a mechanical/hydraulic failure (such as a stuck spool valve or pressure irregularity) preventing the remote valve from operating correctly.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the Code: Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to confirm the presence of code 0A.81.24.

  2. Check General Hydraulics: Ensure the hydraulic pump is building pressure and that other hydraulic functions (like the 3-point hitch or other remote valves) are working. If multiple systems are failing, the issue may be the main hydraulic pump rather than the specific valve.

  3. Inspect Wiring: Check the wiring harness and electrical connector leading to External Hydraulic Valve 8 for corrosion, fraying, or loose connections.

  4. Test the Solenoid: Check the valve's solenoid for proper resistance and ensure it is receiving the correct voltage from the ECU when actuated.

  5. Operational Check: Ensure the rear lower links are not locked in a position that mechanically interferes with the remote valve's operation, which can sometimes mimic a valve failure on certain setups.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic controls to relieve all pressure from the hydraulic system.

  2. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the solenoids.

  3. Locate the Valve

Identify External Hydraulic Valve 8 on the rear hydraulic valve block assembly.

  4. Disconnect Lines

Place a catch pan underneath the valve block. Disconnect the hydraulic hoses/lines connected to the valve.

  5. Remove the Valve

Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid. Unbolt the valve from the hydraulic block.

  6. Install the New Valve

Mount the replacement valve, ensuring all O-rings are properly seated to prevent leaks. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  7. Reassembly

Reconnect the hydraulic lines and the electrical connector.

  8. Finalize

Reconnect the battery, top off the hydraulic fluid to replace any lost during the repair, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the DTC. Test the valve for proper operation.
