A.83.18

Massey Ferguson A.83.18 – Autotronic 5: External Hydraulic Valve 8 Issue

Issue description

Indicates an electrical, connection, or mechanical malfunction associated with the 8th external hydraulic remote spool valve. When this code is triggered, the tractor's control unit will typically block/lock the affected valve to prevent further damage.

Check the cause

  1. Clear and reset the error code from the control unit dashboard, then restart the engine to see if the valve unlocks from a temporary glitch

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connector plugging into External Valve 8 for open circuits, short circuits (+12V or 0V), or corrosion

  3. Check hydraulic fluid and filters for contamination (dirt or metal shavings), correct fluid level, and blocked filters or suction strainers

  4. Inspect the quick-release couplers on Valve 8 for dirt, worn tips, or failed internal valves that could restrict flow

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Turn off the tractor and actuate the hydraulic levers/controls to relieve all residual pressure in the hydraulic system.

  2. Access the Valve Stack

Locate the external hydraulic valve block at the rear of the tractor. Identify Valve 8 (refer to your specific model's service manual for the exact stack order).

  3. Disconnect Electronics

Unplug the electrical solenoid connector for Valve 8.

  4. Remove the Valve

Unbolt the hydraulic hoses and mounting brackets (e.g., rear axle mounting bracket). Remove the faulty spool valve assembly from the stack.

  5. Inspect and Replace

If the issue is a minor leak, replace the O-rings and seals (e.g., between the valve and the lift cover). If the internal spool is scored, sticking, or the solenoid has failed internally, replace the entire valve assembly.

  6. Reassemble

Install the new valve, torque the mounting bolts to spec, and reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical harness.

  7. Fluid Maintenance

If the old valve failed due to contaminated fluid, drain the hydraulic oil and replace the hydraulic/transmission filters before operating.

  8. Clear Codes

Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the 0A.83.18 code and test the remote valve for proper operation.
