A.8X.13

Massey Ferguson A.8X.13 – Hydraulic Control Module: External Hydraulic Valve 8 Issue

Issue description

Malfunction within the 8th rear external hydraulic remote valve (spool valve) circuit. The system has detected that the valve is not responding correctly to electronic commands, typically caused by an electrical open or short circuit in the valve's solenoid, a communication failure between the valve and the tractor's network, or a mechanical binding of the spool.

Check the cause

  1. Terminal Verification: Navigate to the hydraulics page on the Datatronic 5 terminal. Check the settings for Valve 8 (flow rate, engagement speed, and naming) to ensure the software hasn't locked out the valve due to a user setting.

  2. Visual Inspection: Inspect the physical connections to External Hydraulic Valve 8 at the rear hydraulic block. Look for damaged wiring harnesses, loose connectors, or corrosion on the solenoid terminals.

  3. Cross-Testing: Swap the electrical connector from Valve 8 to another known working valve (e.g., Valve 7). If the fault code changes to indicate an issue with Valve 7, the problem is in the wiring harness or ECU. If the fault remains on Valve 8, the solenoid or the valve itself has failed.

  4. Electrical Testing: Use a multimeter to test the solenoid coil resistance on Valve 8 to check for an open or shorted coil.

  5. Hydraulic System Check: Ensure hydraulic fluid levels are correct and the hydraulic filter is not clogged, as low pressure can sometimes trigger valve response codes.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the tractor. Cycle the hydraulic control levers/joystick in the cab to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure from the system.

  2. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts while working on the solenoids.

  3. Locate the Valve

Locate External Hydraulic Valve 8 on the rear hydraulic remote stack. Clean the area thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic block.

  4. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the electrical harness connector from the valve's solenoid.

  5. Remove the Valve

Remove the retaining bolts securing the valve slice to the hydraulic block/stack. Have a drain pan ready to catch residual hydraulic fluid.

  6. Extract the Unit

Carefully slide the valve out. Take note of the O-rings between the valve slices so they are not lost or left stuck to the mating surface.

  7. Prep the New Valve

Install new O-rings/seals on the mating surface of the new replacement valve. Note: If silicone was previously used in the joint area, it must be completely cleaned out, as residue will prevent the new valve from sealing properly.

  8. Installation

Bolt the new valve into the stack and torque the retaining bolts to OEM specifications.

  9. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness and the negative battery cable.

  10. Testing

Refill hydraulic fluid to the proper level. Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the DTC. Start the tractor and test the valve operation via the cab terminal to ensure there are no leaks and the code does not return.
