A.8X.24

Massey Ferguson A.8X.24 – Tractor Control Unit (TCU) / Autotronic module: External Hydraulic Valve 8 Issue

Issue description

The tractor's diagnostic system has detected an electrical anomaly or communication failure with the solenoid that controls the 8th external hydraulic remote (spool) valve at the rear of the tractor.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the #8 hydraulic remote valve on the rear valve block. Look for harness rub points, broken wires, or corrosion inside the connector.

  2. Coil Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the solenoid coil on valve 8. Compare the reading to a known good valve (like valve 1 or 2) to determine if the coil has an open circuit or is shorted out.

  3. Ground Integrity: Check the ground connection for the hydraulic valve block to ensure it is clean and tight.

  4. Swap Test: Swap the solenoid coil from valve 8 with an adjacent working valve. If the fault code changes to the new valve location, the solenoid is the culprit. If the code remains A.8X.24, the issue is in the wiring harness or the control module.

  5. In-Cab Control Check: Verify that the fingertip control or joystick in the cab is functioning properly and not physically stuck, as implausible signals can sometimes trigger valve errors.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the engine and cycle the hydraulic remote levers/switches in the cab to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  3. Locate the Valve

Go to the rear external hydraulic valve stack and identify the slice corresponding to valve #8.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

Disconnect the electrical harness from the faulty solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or clip holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem, and slide the coil off.

  5. Inspect the Cartridge

If the valve was physically sticking, carefully unscrew the hydraulic valve cartridge. Inspect it for metal debris or torn O-rings. Clean the cartridge and replace O-rings if necessary.

  6. Install New Parts

Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve cartridge and tighten the retaining nut.

  7. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back into the new solenoid. Reconnect the battery.

  8. Clear Codes & Test

Turn the ignition on. Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the DTCs. Start the tractor and test the #8 remote valve for proper operation.
