Massey Ferguson AC10 – Air Conditioning (AIRCON) control module: Evaporator temperature sensor Sensor short-circuited

Issue description

The system detects that the signal from the evaporator temperature sensor is short-circuited (either to ground or to battery voltage). As a safety consequence to prevent the evaporator core from freezing over, the air conditioning system is automatically turned off and cooling is disabled.

Check the cause

  1. Connect a PC or diagnostic tool to monitor the live data for the evaporator temperature sensor signal accuracy.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the sensor (often routing through connector X443). Check for rubbed-through wires causing a short to ground, or melted wires causing a short to battery voltage.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and measure its internal resistance using a multimeter. If the sensor reads as a dead short (0 ohms or out of the specified range), the sensor itself has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

    The evaporator temperature sensor is located directly on or near the A/C evaporator core. Depending on your specific tractor model, the HVAC unit will either be located in the cab roof or under the cab dash.

  2. Access the HVAC Unit

    Remove the necessary interior trim panels or roof cap to access the evaporator housing.

  3. Disconnect the Sensor

    Locate the sensor probe inserted into the evaporator fins and disconnect its electrical connector (often labeled X443).

  4. Remove and Replace

    Pull the faulty temperature probe out of the evaporator core. Carefully insert the new sensor probe into the same location, ensuring it is seated properly to get an accurate reading of the core temperature.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the wiring harness, reassemble the cab panels, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the AC10 fault code. Test the A/C system to verify that the compressor clutch engages and the cab cools down.
