AC14

Massey Ferguson AC14 – Air Conditioning Control Module (AIRCON): Left-Hand Heating Shutter Motor / Recirculation Actuator Issue

Issue description

The signal from the potentiometer of the left-hand recirculation actuator is outside its normal operating range, or the potentiometer reference is short-circuited to earth (ground).

Check the cause

  1. Check for Physical Obstructions: Verify that the left-hand heating shutter/recirculation flap is not physically jammed by debris, which would prevent the motor from reaching its commanded position and trigger the 'outside operating range' error.

  2. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Trace the wiring from the Air Conditioning Control Module (X439) to the left-hand actuator (X449). Look for chafed wires, especially where the harness routes into the cab roof (check roof harness earth X454/X455).

  3. Test for Short to Ground: Use a multimeter to test the potentiometer reference wire at the actuator connector. The fault explicitly states the reference may be short-circuited to earth.

  4. Check the Connector: Inspect the X449 motor connector for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the AIRCON system.

  2. Access the HVAC Unit

Gain access to the climate control assembly. On most affected models, the HVAC unit and associated harness (X454/X455) are located in the cab roof, requiring the removal of the inner roof headliner.

  3. Locate Component X449

Identify the left-hand heating shutter motor (X449). Do not confuse it with the right-hand motor (X450) or the mixer shutter motor (X451).

  4. Remove the Actuator

Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the mounting screws securing the actuator to the HVAC housing and carefully detach it from the flap linkage.

  5. Install the New Part

Mount the replacement actuator, ensuring the linkage aligns correctly with the flap. Secure the screws and reconnect the electrical harness.

  6. Reassemble and Test

Reinstall the cab roof headliner. Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use an AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) to clear the AC14 fault code. Cycle the climate control from fresh air to recirculation to ensure the new actuator operates within its normal range.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Left-Hand Heating Shutter Motor / Recirculation Actuator (Component X449)

Ensure you are ordering the actuator specifically for the left-hand side (X449), as the right-hand shutter (X450) and the mixer shutter (X451) may have different rotational limits or mounting brackets.
