Massey Ferguson B.01.18 – Hydraulic Control Module: Issue With Spool Position Sensor Value
Issue description
The control module is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or missing electrical signal from the sensor that monitors the physical position of the hydraulic spool valve. When this happens, the tractor's computer cannot verify if the valve is in the neutral, extend, or retract position, which usually results in the system disabling the affected remote valve for safety.

Check the cause
Check for sticking spools (physical hydraulic issue): Inspect the spool valve detents for rust or dirt accumulation that prevents the spool from returning to neutral.
Inspect the wiring harness: Check the wiring pigtail and connector at the affected spool valve slice for moisture ingress, corrosion, or chafed wires shorting against the tractor chassis.
Verify oil and filters: Check for contaminated hydraulic oil or a blocked transmission/hydraulic filter restricting flow, which can cause the valve to actuate slowly or incompletely.
Perform a multimeter test: Back-probe the sensor connector to ensure it is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage and ground from the control module.
Repair steps
Relieve Hydraulic Pressure
Turn off the engine. Move the hydraulic control levers/joystick through all positions to relieve residual pressure in the system.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the affected electro-hydraulic spool slice (either at the rear remotes or the mid-mount loader valve block).
Clean and Rebuild the Detent (If Sticking)
Remove the detent cover on the back of the valve. Clean out any rust or debris. Lubricate the assembly. If the detent springs or balls are damaged, install a replacement detent kit.
Replace the Sensor / Spool Slice
If the spool moves freely but the sensor is dead, disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining screws holding the position sensor to the valve body. (Note: On many modern MF electric spool valves, the sensor is integrated into the electric slice head, requiring replacement of the slice head unit).
Reassemble
Install the new sensor/slice head, ensuring all O-rings are seated correctly to prevent hydraulic leaks. Reconnect the wiring harness.
Calibration
Once the repair is complete, a hydraulic valve calibration procedure must be performed. This is often done via the tractor's dash terminal or requires a dealer to plug in the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) to teach the module the new sensor's neutral, minimum, and maximum travel values.
