Massey Ferguson B.02.03 – Mid Mount Valve Module: Loader Mid Mount Electro Valve Solenoid High Amp Draw

Issue description

The fault code indicates a High Amp Draw on the Loader Mid Mount Electro Valve Solenoid, meaning the electrical current flowing through the solenoid circuit has exceeded normal limits. This condition is typically caused by an internal short circuit within the solenoid coil, a short to ground in the wiring harness, mechanical binding or a jammed valve spool, or low system voltage.

Check the cause

  1. Battery and Voltage Check: Verify that the tractor's battery is fully charged and the alternator is outputting correct voltage. Low voltage can cause solenoids to draw higher amps to compensate.

  2. Wiring Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring from the Mid Mount Valve Module to the loader valve block. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could be shorting to the tractor chassis.

  3. Coil Resistance Test: Disconnect the electrical connector from the suspect solenoid. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance (Ohms) across the solenoid pins. If the resistance is significantly lower than manufacturer specifications (or reads as a dead short), the coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  4. Spool Position Sensor Check: Check the spool position sensor values via the diagnostic menu on the dash. If the sensor indicates the spool is not moving when commanded, the valve cartridge may be mechanically jammed.

  5. Amp Draw Test: Use a multimeter with an amp clamp to measure the actual current draw of the solenoid when the loader joystick is actuated, comparing it against the specified normal amp range.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the tractor, lower the loader to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  2. Locate the Valve Block

    Locate the mid-mount electro-hydraulic valve block, typically mounted on the right side of the tractor chassis below the cab where the loader hydraulic lines connect.

  3. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the exterior of the valve block and the faulty solenoid with brake cleaner to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the faulty solenoid.

  5. Remove the Solenoid Coil

    Remove the retaining nut at the end of the valve stem. Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge.

  6. Inspect the Cartridge

    Check the exposed valve cartridge for physical damage or leaks. (If the valve spool was mechanically jammed, you may need to unthread the entire cartridge and replace it).

  7. Install the New Solenoid

    Slide the new solenoid coil over the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut. Do not overtighten, as this can distort the cartridge.

  8. Reconnect and Test

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. Start the tractor and operate the loader joystick to verify smooth operation and ensure the fault code has cleared.
