Massey Ferguson B.02.18 – Mid Mount Valve Module: Issue With Spool Position Sensor Value

Issue description

The sensor responsible for monitoring the physical position of the hydraulic spool valve is sending an erratic, missing, or out-of-range electrical signal to the control module. This usually points to a failed sensor, a wiring issue, or a spool valve that is physically jammed and unable to reach its commanded position.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Mid Mount Valve Module to the spool position sensors for chafed wires, pinched harnesses near the loader brackets, or moisture/corrosion inside the sensor connector

  2. Verify that the sensor is receiving its standard 5V reference supply and has a solid ground

  3. Ensure the hydraulic spool itself is not sticking due to contamination in the hydraulic fluid (if the spool cannot physically move, the sensor value will read as an error)

  4. Attempt to run a hydraulic valve calibration via the tractor's dash or diagnostic tool before replacing hard parts

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Turn off the tractor, lower any attached implements (like a front-end loader) to the ground, and cycle the joystick to relieve residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent short circuits and module damage.

  3. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the Mid Mount Electro Valve block (typically mounted under the right-hand side of the cab or near the mid-chassis loader mounts). Identify the specific spool sensor throwing the code.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Unplug the electrical connector. Remove the retaining screws/bolts holding the position sensor to the end cap of the spool valve.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Carefully align the new sensor with the spool tang. Fasten the retaining screws to the OEM torque specification (do not overtighten, as the housing is easily cracked).

  6. Reassemble and Calibrate

    Reconnect the wiring harness and battery. Turn the key on and use the tractor's diagnostic menu to perform a mandatory Valve Calibration procedure so the module can learn the new sensor's neutral, fully open, and fully closed voltage values.
