Massey Ferguson B.X.03 – Mid Mount Valve Module: Loader Mid Mount Electro Valve Solenoid High Amp Draw

Issue description

The control module is detecting a higher electrical current than specified flowing through the solenoid circuit. This condition is typically caused by a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, an internal short within the solenoid coil itself (degraded insulation), or water ingress causing a short across the connector pins.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the Mid Mount Valve Module to the loader valve block for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or melted shielding that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the affected mid-mount valve solenoid and check for water ingress, mud, or corrosion bridging the pins.

  3. Measure the resistance (Ohm test) across the pins of the suspect solenoid coil and compare it to a known-good solenoid on the same valve block. A significantly lower reading indicates an internal short.

  4. Perform a harness isolation test: with the solenoid disconnected, turn the key on and activate the loader joystick. If the code changes to an 'Open Circuit' code, the solenoid is faulty. If the high amp draw code persists, the short is in the wiring harness.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the mid-mount valve block, which is typically mounted under the right-hand side of the cab or along the loader subframe.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty electro valve solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Remove the retaining nut or cap screw at the end of the valve stem that holds the solenoid coil in place.

  5. Slide Off Coil

    Carefully slide the old solenoid coil off the hydraulic valve cartridge stem. (Note: You usually do not need to open the hydraulic system or remove the cartridge to replace the coil, preventing fluid loss).

  6. Install New Coil

    Clean the valve stem of any dirt or debris. Slide the new replacement solenoid coil onto the stem.

  7. Secure and Reconnect

    Reinstall the retaining nut/screw (do not overtighten, as this can crack the plastic coil housing). Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery. Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the stored DTCs. Start the tractor and operate the loader joystick to verify the fault does not return.
