Massey Ferguson B.X.09 – Mid Mount Valve Module: Loader Mid Mount Electro Valve Solenoid High Amp Draw

Issue description

The electrical current (amperage) flowing through the circuit for the loader's mid-mount electro-hydraulic valve solenoid is exceeding the expected normal range. This usually points to a short circuit in the wiring harness, water ingress in the connector causing a bridge, or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Mid Mount Valve Module to the loader valve block. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or exposed copper touching the tractor frame.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at the affected solenoid. Check for water, dirt, or corrosion bridging the pins, which can cause a high-current short.

  3. Resistance Test (Ohm Meter): Measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil itself. A reading of zero or near-zero ohms indicates the internal coil windings have melted together and shorted out. Compare the reading to a known good solenoid on the same valve block.

  4. Harness Isolation: With the solenoid unplugged, turn the key on and activate the loader joystick. If the code changes to 'Open Circuit' (0B.X.10), the wiring is likely fine and the solenoid is the culprit. If the 'High Amp Draw' code persists while unplugged, the wiring harness is shorted to ground before it reaches the valve.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the mid-mount electro-hydraulic valve block (typically mounted on the right side of the tractor frame, under the cab, or near the loader subframe).

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid.

  4. Remove the Coil

    Remove the retaining nut or screw at the end of the valve stem that holds the solenoid coil in place.

  5. Swap the Part

    Slide the old, shorted solenoid coil off the cartridge stem. Clean the stem of any dirt or debris.

  6. Install

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem and secure it with the retaining nut (do not overtighten, as this can crack the plastic housing).

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the weather seal is seated properly.

  8. Test

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and test the loader functions. Clear the stored DTCs using the dash interface or a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool.
