B.X.12

Massey Ferguson B.X.12 – Mid Mount Valve Module: Loader Mid Mount Electro Valve Solenoid High Amp Draw

Issue description

The electrical solenoid responsible for actuating the mid-mount hydraulic valve (which controls the front-end loader) is pulling more electrical current (amperage) than the system expects. This condition is typically caused by an internal short circuit within the solenoid coil itself, a short-to-ground in the wiring harness leading to the valve, or high resistance caused by a weak battery or corroded connections.

Check the cause

  1. Check the battery and static voltage to ensure it is fully charged (diagnosing high resistance/weak battery cause).

  2. Inspect the wiring harness from the Mid Mount Valve Module to the loader valve solenoid for chafed insulation or pinched wires (diagnosing short-to-ground cause).

  3. Perform a voltage drop test at the solenoid connector with the key ON and loader joystick actuated to ensure it is within 1 volt of battery voltage (diagnosing high resistance cause).

  4. Test the solenoid internal resistance with a multimeter; a near-zero reading indicates a dead short inside the coil (diagnosing internal short circuit cause).

  5. Use an amp clamp on the positive wire to measure the exact current draw when actuated to confirm it exceeds OEM specifications.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Turn off the engine, place the tractor in park, engage the parking brake, and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the loader by moving the joystick in all directions.

  2. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts or sparks during the repair.

  3. Locate the Valve

Locate the mid-mount electro-hydraulic valve block (typically mounted under the right side of the cab where the loader hydraulic hoses connect).

  4. Remove the Solenoid

Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the faulty solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or bolt at the end of the solenoid stem.

  5. Swap the Coil

Slide the old solenoid coil off the hydraulic valve cartridge. (Note: You usually do not need to open the hydraulic system or remove the valve cartridge itself, just the electromagnetic coil sliding over it).

  6. Install New Part

Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem, secure it with the retaining nut, and plug the electrical connector back in.

  7. Test

Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and operate the loader to ensure the B.X.12 code clears and the high amp draw condition is resolved.
