Massey Ferguson B.X.18 – Mid Mount Valve Module or Hydraulic Valve Control Module: Issue With Spool Position Sensor Value
Issue description
The control module is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or missing electrical signal from the position sensor mounted on one of the hydraulic spool valves. This occurs when the signal value does not match the commanded position or if the voltage drops out, often resulting in the disabling of that specific hydraulic circuit for safety.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the affected spool valve for chafed wires, corrosion, or bent pins.
Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to verify that the sensor is receiving its reference voltage (typically 5V) and has a solid ground from the ECU.
Ensure the spool valve itself is not physically sticking due to debris, contaminated hydraulic fluid, or worn detents.
Use the tractor's dashboard menu or a diagnostic tool to run a hydraulic valve calibration to see if the sensor has simply drifted out of tolerance.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Turn off the tractor, lower all hydraulic implements to the ground, and cycle the hydraulic levers/joystick to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent short circuits and ECU damage.
Locate the Sensor
Identify the specific spool valve throwing the code (mid-mount block or rear remotes). The position sensor is typically mounted on the end cap of the spool valve.
Remove the Sensor
Disconnect the electrical pigtail. Remove the retaining screws (usually Allen or Torx head) holding the sensor housing to the valve block.
Install the New Sensor
Clean the mounting surface. Install the new sensor, ensuring any O-rings or seals are properly seated to prevent hydraulic leaks. Torque the retaining screws to OEM spec.
Reassemble and Power Up
Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.
Calibrate
You must perform a spool valve calibration procedure using the tractor's diagnostic interface so the ECU can learn the new sensor's minimum, maximum, and neutral voltage values.
Clear Codes
Clear the DTCs and test the hydraulic function.
