Massey Ferguson B.X.22 – Transmission / Hydraulic Control Unit: Issue With Calibration OF Valves

Issue description

The onboard diagnostic system detected an anomaly during the calibration of the transmission or hydraulic electro-valves. This indicates that the system cannot properly detect the engagement point of the clutches or that a solenoid valve is not responding correctly to the calibration parameters.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the transmission oil temperature is between 35°C (95°F) and 45°C (113°F) by engaging the PTO to warm the tractor.

  2. Cycle the Power Shuttle lever (forward and reverse) 10 times in each direction for 5–10 seconds to bring the control unit and solenoid valves up to transmission temperature.

  3. Configure the Power Shuttle progressivity settings (forward engagement, reverse engagement, and ratio shifting sensitivity) all to '0' on the dash control center.

  4. Ensure the differential lock, front axle (4WD), and PTO are completely disengaged to prevent skewed calibration results.

  5. On older electric shuttle models (e.g., 6100 series), verify the voltage on the shuttle position potentiometer located on the right-hand side of the transmission cover.

Repair steps

  1. Position tractor

    Position the tractor on completely flat ground and release the parking brake.

  2. Shift to neutral

    Place the tractor in neutral.

  3. Set engine speed

    Raise the engine speed to exactly 1500 RPM (± 100 RPM) using the hand throttle.

  4. Prepare calibration mode

    Lift the Power Shuttle arm into the raised position (left of the steering wheel) and hold it there while simultaneously pressing the differential lock switch.

  5. Enter calibration mode

    Hold both for approximately 10 seconds until the right-hand transmission gear screen displays 'Ct'.

  6. Initiate calibration

    Once 'Ct' appears, place the Power Shuttle arm into the forward position to initiate the calibration.

  7. Allow calibration to run

    Allow the tractor to calibrate for approximately 10 minutes. It is normal to hear the transmission shifting and making noises. The screen will continuously display 'Ct'.

  8. Verify completion

    When finished, the screen will display the last transmission ratio used (e.g., '1A/2A').

  9. Save calibration

    To save the new calibration, place the Power Shuttle into neutral, disengage the differential lock, idle the engine down, and turn the tractor off.

  10. Test and verify

    Restart the tractor and test forward/reverse maneuvers. If the calibration fails again or the code returns, you likely have a failed modulator electrovalve or a damaged internal clutch pack.
