   Battery Terminal Inspection: Ensure the battery terminals are securely fastened, clean, and not contaminated. Loose or highly corroded connections can sometimes cause voltage spikes or erratic readings.

   Static Voltage Test: With the engine off, measure the battery voltage using a multimeter. A healthy 12V battery should read around 12.6V.

   Running Voltage Test: Start the engine and measure the voltage at the battery terminals. A healthy charging system should hold steady between 14.0V and 14.4V. If the multimeter reads significantly higher (e.g., 15V or more), the internal voltage regulator is confirmed to be overcharging and requires replacement.

   Wiring Loom Check: Inspect the wiring loom, connectors, and earth (ground) cables between the alternator and the battery for damage or brittle wires, which are common on older workhorses.

   Disconnect Power

   Always disconnect the negative (-) battery cable first to prevent short circuits.

   Remove the Alternator

   Locate the alternator on the engine block. Disconnect the electrical plug and the B+ terminal wire from the rear of the alternator. Release the tension on the drive belt and slip the belt off the alternator pulley. Unbolt the alternator mounting hardware and remove the unit from the tractor.

   Replace the Regulator or Alternator

   If rebuilding: Remove the rear dust cover of the alternator to access the internal regulator. Swap the faulty regulator with the new module (e.g., Mahle MGX 1277KIT) and reinstall the cover. If replacing: Ensure the new alternator matches the 14V / 120 Amp rating of the original.

   Reinstallation

   Mount the alternator, torque the bolts to spec, and reinstall the drive belt.

   Reconnect and Test

   Reconnect the electrical connections, followed by the negative battery cable. Start the tractor and verify with a multimeter that the charging voltage is now safely within the 14.0V–14.4V range.
