Massey Ferguson D139 – Dash / Instrument Panel: Electrical signal too high. X68 - Clutch pedal sensor
Issue description
The control module is receiving a signal voltage from the clutch pedal potentiometer (sensor X68) that exceeds the expected maximum operating range. This condition typically points to an internal short in the sensor, a short to power (+5V or +12V) in the wiring harness, or a broken ground circuit.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the clutch pedal sensor (X68) located at the clutch pedal pivot. Look for physical damage, loose mounting brackets, or a disconnected linkage fork.
Wiring Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness from the sensor to the Dash/controller. Look for chafed wires that might be shorting to a +12V or +5V power source.
Ground Circuit Test: Test the ground line between the controller and the potentiometer terminal to ensure the sensor has a solid ground. A lost ground will cause the signal voltage to spike high.
Voltage Sweep Test: Back-probe the signal wire and monitor the voltage while slowly depressing the clutch pedal. The voltage should change smoothly without dropping out or spiking out of range. If the voltage is stuck high regardless of pedal position, the sensor is internally shorted.
Repair steps
Disconnect power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Remove the sensor
Locate the X68 clutch pedal potentiometer under the dash/cab floor at the clutch pedal assembly. Disconnect the electrical harness connector. Remove the mounting screws/bolts and detach the sensor fork/linkage from the pedal.
Install the new sensor
Mount the replacement potentiometer and ensure the linkage fork is properly aligned with the pedal pivot. Secure the mounting hardware.
Reconnect wiring
Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor and reconnect the battery.
Calibration
Crucial step: After replacing the clutch pedal sensor, you must perform a clutch pedal calibration via the tractor's diagnostic menu or Dash interface so the controller learns the new 'fully released' and 'fully depressed' voltage values.
Clear codes
Clear the D139 fault code from the Dash and test drive the tractor to ensure smooth clutch modulation and forward/reverse shuttling.
