Massey Ferguson D140 – Dashboard / Instrument Panel: Electrical signal too low (Clutch Pedal Sensor X68)
Issue description
The voltage signal returning from the clutch pedal potentiometer (sensor X68) to the controller has dropped below the acceptable minimum threshold. This condition is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring harness, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running between the clutch pedal sensor (X68) and the instrument panel for chafed wires, breaks, or areas where the harness may have shorted to the tractor's chassis.
Disconnect the plug at the clutch pedal sensor and check for bent pins, corrosion, or moisture ingress, which can cause voltage drops.
Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage and ground from the dash controller.
Back-probe the signal wire and slowly depress the clutch pedal to perform a sweep test. The voltage should change smoothly. If the reading is a constant 0V or drops out entirely during the sweep, the potentiometer is internally faulty or shorted to ground.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the clutch pedal sensor (X68) mounted at the pivot point/base of the clutch pedal assembly inside the cab.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor. Remove the mounting screws or bracket holding the sensor to the pedal assembly and slide the old sensor off the pivot shaft.
Installation
Install the new clutch pedal potentiometer, ensuring the mechanical linkage/fork aligns correctly with the pedal's pivot mechanism. Secure it with the mounting hardware.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor and reconnect the battery.
Calibration
Calibrate the newly installed clutch pedal sensor so the instrument panel learns the new minimum (pedal up) and maximum (pedal down) voltage values. This is typically done via the tractor's dashboard diagnostic menu or using a dealer diagnostic tool.
Clear Codes
Clear the D140 fault code from the dash and test the tractor's forward/reverse shuttle and clutch modulation to ensure smooth operation.
