Massey Ferguson D141 – Instrument Panel (Dash): Engine Speed Sensor

The system detects that the signal voltage from the engine speed sensor (designated in wiring diagrams as sensor X481 for Dyna-4 and Dyna-6 transmissions, or X25 for Dyna-VT) is out of the expected range. This fault can cause severe drivability issues; for example, the engine may rev uncontrollably and fail to shut down when the key is turned off.

   Use Massey Ferguson Wintest diagnostic software to perform active tests on the engine speed sensor to verify if the sensor itself is failing.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the engine speed sensor (X481 or X25) for physical damage, corrosion, or a short circuit to +12V AC.

   Check the continuity and voltage of the sensor and its wiring using a multimeter. Compare the resistance values to the OEM specifications in your manual.

   Ensure there are no communication errors on the CAN network. D141 can sometimes be triggered alongside CAN bus error codes (like D149 or D150) if the Autotronic controller loses communication with the dash.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the engine speed sensor (crankshaft/flywheel speed sensor) on the engine block/flywheel housing. Note: On certain larger models (like the MF 6499), accessing this sensor may require removing a rear tire or other obstructing components to reach the mounting location safely.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place. Carefully pull the old sensor out of its mounting hole.

   Installation

   Clean the mounting surface to ensure no debris falls into the housing. Insert the new engine speed sensor, ensuring any O-rings are properly seated. Install and tighten the retaining bolt. Reconnect the electrical connector.

   Reassembly & Testing

   Reinstall any removed components (e.g., tire). Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and verify that the D141 code has cleared and the engine operates and shuts down normally.
