Massey Ferguson D144 – Dash / Instrument Panel (Component X55): X56 - Power Control lever: Electrical signal too high.
Issue description
The voltage signal coming from the lever's internal sensor/potentiometer is exceeding the expected maximum threshold. This underlying condition is typically caused by a short circuit to power (+12V) on the signal wire, an open circuit on the sensor's ground/return wire, or an internal failure of the lever itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the X56 Power Control lever on the steering column down to the instrument panel/dash controller for chafed wires or pinched harnesses.
Use a multimeter to check the signal wire from the lever for a short circuit to +12V.
Verify that the ground/return circuit for the lever is intact. An open ground will cause the signal voltage to float high.
Back-probe the lever's connector and monitor the signal voltage while moving the lever through its positions (Forward, Neutral, Reverse). If the voltage remains pegged high regardless of physical position, the internal sensor has failed.
Repair steps
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
This prevents electrical damage.
Remove the plastic shrouds/covers around the steering column.
This provides access to the base of the Power Control lever (Component X56).
Disconnect the electrical plug connecting the lever to the main dash harness.
Repair the damaged section of the harness and secure it away from pinch points.
Perform this if your diagnostics revealed a wiring issue (short to power or broken ground).
Unbolt the faulty Power Control lever assembly from its mounting point on the steering column.
Perform this if the wiring is intact and the lever itself failed the voltage test.
Install the new Power Control lever and secure the mounting hardware.
Reconnect the electrical plug and reinstall the steering column covers.
Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and clear the stored fault codes from the dash.
Start the tractor and test the forward, neutral, and reverse shuttle functions.
This ensures the code does not return and the tractor moves correctly.
